Burgess Hill Under 14s continued their A Team campaign for the second half of the year and hosted Edenbridge at Pokeys Close on a fine Mothers Day morning.

With the pitch looking in great condition, the match kicked off with Hill having the slope and the wind first half.

Hill put on the pressure first and pushed into the opposition half. Edenbridge cleared their lines but that gave Hill an attacking lineout.

The ball was won well and recycled by the forwards. Quick ball lead to speedy passing down the line and Bennett on the wing burned the winger for the score in the corner. The wide out conversion was missed and the score moved to 5-0.

However, Edenbridge showed their resilience and pushed back hard from the kick off. Under pressure Hill gave away 3 penalties in a row and this produced some great territory for Edenbridge. From the line-out they formed a very solid maul and drove for the corner and scored. The conversion missed, 5-5 a piece.

Hill now continued to drive at Edenbridge only for the quick and aggressive Edenbridge no.8 to turn over any player isolated.

However, Hill again pushed for the corner and a great break by full back and Back of the Match Miller lead to superb field position and Hill had the ball in the corner. Hill won a penalty and the ball was spun to Larder at fly half. Looking to cut against the grain, Larder smashed into the Edenbridge winger and powered over for the try.

The conversion missed, it was half time and 10-5 to Hill.

Turning around for the second half, Hill were facing a challenging task and Edenbridge seemed to sense they had the upper hand. Pinning Hill back into the corner, Edenbridge forced Hill to drop the ball and won a scrum. The Scrum was solid and ball moved wide. A slipped tackle at outside centre and the 2 on 1 was well played and a score in the corner. Again, the conversion missed and the match reached 10-15 to Edenbridge.

Yet again Edenbridge used the slope and wind well and pushed Hill back into the comer. The Hill line out was under pressure and an unfortunate fumble, a lost ball and a turnover resulted in Edenbridge ball. The All Blacks defense was stretched and did not react quickly and the try was scored in the corner. The conversion missed and it was 10-20 to Edenbridge.

With 8 minutes to go Hill upped their game and forced the Edgenbridge players into mistakes. Fantastic tackles by Forward of the Match Kyalo helped swing the momentum and Hill were on the front foot.

Hill won a quick ruck and Larder spun a miss pass to Granger. A half break and he popped the ball to Bennett on the wing. Still with a couple of tacklers to evade, Bennett made the break and was away. With no one in front of him, Bennett scored under the posts and with the successful conversion by Collingbourne the match finished at 17-20 to Edenbridge.

Despite the loss, Hill should take heart from a tremendous effort with only 16 lads available and against the league leaders.

Next week the A team league concludes at home vs Horsham. Kickoff is 11.00am.
