Burgess Hill cook up a storm as Darragh Fails to Dampen Spirits

Owain Jenkins10 Dec 2024 - 11:13

Burgess Hill RFC emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter against a previously unbeaten Heathfield RFC, showcasing impressive attacking prowess and a strong defensive line

The game could not have started any better for the young men in black, although for this game they switched to their Orange kit to aid the match official as Storm Darragh was likely to make for some very muddy kit!

A Heathfield knock on from the opening plays saw an early surge from Burgess Hill, Finn Brady, making his first start at outside-half, orchestrated a brilliant opening play, to put centre Archie Thompson in to some space and he beat 3 defenders to cross under the posts in the 3rd minute, converted by Tommy Batchelor (0-7). The momentum continued as Batchelor himself touched down in the 11th minute, extending the lead, with an excellent arcing run down the slope to score midway out. (0-12)

Heathfield fought back valiantly, securing a penalty try in the 12th minute to reduce the deficit. A fumble on the halfway line by Burgess Hill allowed the Heathfield winger to kick through twice and he was adjudged to have been impeded in the ensuing footrace for the ball. (7-12) However, Burgess Hill remained composed, with captain Patrick Lane adding another try in the 23rd minute, from a pick and go from the base of the scrum to score midway out, this time converted fantastically by Batchelor into a ferocious wind. (7-19)

The second half saw Heathfield throw the kitchen sink at Hill and finally broke the deadlock after Hill repelled wave after wave of Heathfield runners, including holding them up over the Line. (12-19) The final 10 minutes saw Hill push for a fourth bonus point try however some excellent defence from Heathfield, particularly disrupting a maul 5 meters out brought the game to end.

Coach's Corner: "We are extremely pleased with the team's performance today," said Burgess Hill coach Jon. "We achieved all our pre-match goals and this was undoubtedly our best performance of the season."

Star Player: Olly Moore was awarded the star player of the match for his outstanding contribution to the team's victory, his communication and work rate were excellent and he was a critical part of a dominant scrum.
